Why does my new abyssinian guinea pig have a strange odor?

abyssinian

I have raised guineas since I was young and never had one with such a weird odor. She is a ginger/red pig. It doesn’t smell like feces or urine and her cage doesn’t smell. The smell reminds me of a iron or blood smell. Otherwise she seems healthy and happy. Any ideas?
Actually they do not smell like ****. Poor care makes them smell bad.

Because she is a guinea pig, and they smell like shit.

Firstly, i would check that the cage is cleaned regulalry, check if there is anything under her bedding which might be rotten?
And look all over her to see if she might be injured..apart from that that might be her normal smell.
Have you always noticed that she smells like that?

I think it’s normal because my guinea pig has her own strange smell, too, (and not a very pleasant smell) but I know she is fairly healthy (she has an upcoming vet appointment because she came from a pet store…she has a bald patch…) but I do everything I can to keep my little girl happy. :) Also, have you ever noticed that all animals have their own smell? Like dogs have a smell and cats have another smell (I don’t really like any of their ’smells’, but I LOVE my cats, dog, and guinea pigs) :D
Maybe, just to be safe, you should take her to the vet… :/

By the way, your totally right about the poor care making pets smell bad…whoever said guinea pigs smell like **** needs to do loads of researching. >_

It may be normal, but it could be a urine infection.

Bladder infections can form in many ways. Generally a urinary infection has symptoms like straining to urinate, blood in urine, smelly odor. Generally guinea pig urine is yellow and a little cloudy too sometimes.

But it may not be urine infection. Some guinea pigs have their own stench and odor.

I highly recommend that you take your guinea pig to the vet for a check up, just in case.

I breed guinea pigs including Abyssinian, they don’t and should not usually smell. The possible reasons could be that the cage is dirty or the guinea pig has poo stuck to its bottom. To reduce the smell I would recommend that you wash it and then clean the cage out before doing anything else. If nothing is happening you could also try and change its diet a bit.

    Hope this helped.
